Shyla Colt
Shyla Colt grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, but has lived a variety of different places thanks to her wanderlust, interesting careers, and marriage to a United States Marine. She’s always loved books and wrote her very first novel at the age of fifteen. She keeps a copy of her first submission letter on her desk for inspiration.
After a lifetime of traveling, she settled down and knew her time had come to write. Diving into her new career like she does everything else, with enthusiasm, research and a lot of prayers, she had her first book published in June of 2011. As a full-time writer, stay at home mother, and wife, there’s never a dull moment in her household.
She weaves her tales in spare moments and the evenings with a cup of coffee or tea at her side and the characters in her head for company. A self-professed rebel with a pen. Her goal is to diversify romance as she continues to genre hop, and offer up strong female characters.
Author Interview
How long have you been writing? When did you decide to become an author?
I’ve been writing since i was old enough too. But it wasn’t until i approached thirty a few years ago, that I decided to really go for it.
How do you find inspiration?
Wow, i find it everywhere, from music i connect to, articles i read, shows i watch, and real life experiences. I’m always wondering, “What If”.
How do you go about writing a book? Do you have any schedule, tricks or tips to share?
It starts with an idea I think on for a while, and plot out in my mind. I don’t do intense outlines, because i find it stunts my writing. Instead I have a beginning, middle, and end, and let the characters walk me through the rest. I don’t have a set schedule. I stay at home with two children, so I have a lot of stop and start when writing. I will say my favorite time is at night when the rest of the house is sleeping. My tip would be to keep writing no matter what, and study your craft.
What kind of books do you read? Who is your favorite author?
I like all kinds of books from the classics , to horror, and paranormal. I don’t have one author that rules above all, but S.E. Hinton is one of my favorites. She really inspired me to write.
What are you currently working on?
Right now I’m working on book 4 in the Dueling Devils M.C. Series.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
To teleport. ( Since being Doctor who isn’t technically a super power)
Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what kind of music?
I love music of all kinds. I often have soundtracks for my stories. It really helps keep me in the right frame of mind for the book I’m working on.
Who is your favorite villain?
Dracula
If you had to pick between receiving a million dollars today, or $1000 a month for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
I think i’d take the million. I’m great at money management, so i could make it last.
If you could take anyone out for coffee, dead, alive, or fictional, who would it be?
Holy Moly… my Dad. I’d like to talk to him again.
