Debbie Roppolo
Award-winning author Debbie Roppolo grew up in the Blackland Prairie region of Texas, where miles of grassland and her horse were her best friends. Yep, that’s right–a modern day version of Laura Ingalls.
She is the author of Amelia Frump and her Peanut Butter Loving Imagination, and Amelia Frump and her Peanut Butter Loving Imagination is Cooking Up a Peanut Butter Storm, winner of a Purple Dragonfly Book Award (2013) Both books are published by DWB Children’s Line.
Roppolo’s stories have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in several of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books.
Cooking is her second passion, and she is an award-winning baker, and a field editor for Taste of Home magazine.
Married for over twenty years, she now resides in the Texas Hill Country with her husband John, and two children.
Author Interview
How long have you been writing? When did you decide to become an author?
I have always enjoyed creating stories. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of sitting at my grandmother’s tables, writing and illustrating stories while she prepared my favorite lunch (fried chicken) on her antique stove. I began writing for publication in my early thirties, shortly after the birth of my second child.
How do you find inspiration?
Story ideas can be found almost daily, whether they be humorous or uplifting. My children are my heart, and it’s from their antics I get ideas for parenting humor stories. I was very mischievous as a child, and it’s from those adventures I find the inspiration for my children’s stories.
How do you go about writing a book? Do you have any schedule, tricks or tips to share?
I love writing in the early afternoon, usually after lunch. Much of my to-do list has been accomplished, and my thoughts are more together. Turning on the Scentsy (autumn scents), and music from Pandora helps me concentrate even more. I find that whenever I do have writer’s block, taking a walk through nature helps to clear my mind, and allows me to work out the snarls in my writing.
What kind of books do you read? Who is your favorite author?
It’s hard to pick one genre. I love reading any of Stephen King’s books, when I’m in the mood for a good scare, and anything written by Judy Blume when I’m on a road trip.
What are you currently working on?
My third book in the Amelia Frump series: Amelia Frump and the Billion-Cajillion Dollar Secret.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
As a mom of a child involved in athletic and other school activities, I’d love to have the power of teleportation.
Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what kind of music?
I love all kinds of music, but instrumental seems to help me focus better.
Who is your favorite villain?
I usually don’t root for the villian, but Darth Vader grabs my interest. In Return of the Jedi, we learn that there is still a shred of goodness within him.
If you had to pick between receiving a million dollars today, or $1000 a month for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
Even though we should live every moment to its fullest, there is no guarantee of our existence continuing tomorrow. That’s why I’d choose the million dollars in one day.
If you could take anyone out for coffee, dead, alive, or fictional, who would it be?
My father. He passed away when I was a teenager, and that would give me the opportunity to thank him for the life lessons he taught me about tenacity, courage, and compassion.
